It’s 6:10am, just on time to get my
sisters to school. The man with the hand wiper and the Pepsi bottle full of
diluted dish detergent walks up the car expectantly. For once, I let him. He
smiles wide, happy to have a customer that wasn’t first a hostage this early in
the morning.

Art and Fear

So as part of my partly self-imposed stint of unemployment, I’ve had a bit more
time to read, which is a great thing for me. I’ve always found reading to be
relaxing and informative by nature. In particular I’ve been reading Art & Fear:
Observations on the Perils (and Rewards) of Artmaking by David Bayles and Ted
Orland. It’s a book that wears its contents on its sleeve. It primarily concerns
itself with the difficulties that artists face when trying to create their (our)
work. It covers a range of these from the eternal feeling of being an imposter,
the lie that we tell ourselves that “if I just do this then I’ll be an
artist”, dealing with the desired to be accepted, perfectionism and a whole host
of other, well, Perils™.

Redesign in Progress

Hello! It has once again been many months since I last updated this blog. One
of the reasons for that is that I’ve found it less and less fun to get this
blog to do what I want it to do. As a result, I’ve begun to spend some time
making a theme for this site from scratch, which is proving to be a learning
experience, but I’m excited about it as it means it will be a lot easier
for me to to share some of my more tech-coded (I’m so funny) sketches and
ideas with you all.

There Is Still Time

So today I was thinking about HRT, as one does. Diabetes runs in my family, and if you know even a
little bit about diabetes, you’d understand that it’s a disorder of the pancreas which is the
organ of your body that produces

insulin
1

, a hormone that allows your body to make use of glucose
for energy. And given that I do eventually want to replace the testosterone in my system with
oestrogen, I was wondering what, if any impact feminizing hormone replacement therapy would have on
my risk for diabetes or creating complications therewith. That led me to start reading a few
academic papers. From what I can tell, the science on this seems to conclude that
there’s no proven increase in diabetes risk for trans women using HRT

<sup>
2

<sup>
3
, so that’s great!

Fun Little Sites

So this page is for one thing and one thing only: Fun little sites I’ve stumbled across on the
internet. It will be updated whenever I stumble across a new fun little site on the internet. I
want to do this because we live in a time where so much of the internet exists solely for commerce
and the exchange of money or accumulation of capital that it’s nice to remember that people
are and always will be creative and share that creativity with the whole world.

2025 11 17

And this is how I disappear.

It starts with a scream, a wail that pierces the air and finds its way into the heavens. Or it would
if I let it out of my head. In here it swings around like a wrecking ball, shattering me. I feel
like I’ve been absent. Absent from my own life for more than I’ve been here for it. I feel like I’m
still walking around like a ghost would. I touch a few lives here and there and then I’m gone. Now
my vestments have changed, my howls might be a little more audible and my form slightly more opaque,
but a ghost I remain. I still hardly see myself in the mirror. I still feel a pull towards something
outside myself that I can’t quite nail down. Unfinished business I guess.

Hurricane Melissa Relief

This is a living document to keep track of ways you can contribute to the recovery efforts for the
countries and peoples affected by the tragedy that was Hurricane Melissa, as of writing, the
strongest hurricane to ever make landfall in recorded history. It’s important for us to recognize
that not only is Hurricane Melissa the strongest hurricane on record, it likely is setting a new
precedent for the kinds of storms we in the Caribbean can expect to deal with in the coming years as
a direct result of anthropogenic climate change.
Is that scary? Yes. Fuck yes. But it’s real. It’s not fearmongering to follow the trends we’ve been
seeing and expecting to see for the past several decades as primarily “first world” countries
continue to burn fossil fuels at rates that are both utterly unnecessary and actively deadly.

A Brush With Homeopathy

I’ve been in Cartagena, Colombia for the past few days and so far it’s been a great experience. I’ve
been enjoying the food and my Spanish is improving very quickly. Unfortunately, yesterday I
started coming down with something. After my classes classes, I went to the pharmacy, head a bit
swimmy and not fully myself. I asked the pharmacist for something for a dry cough (I had
medications for my other symptoms already) and when he put down the cough syrup in front of me, I
didn’t look too hard at it, assuming that whatever he’d put in front of me would be
sufficient for my symptoms, so I purchased it and went about the rest of my day.

Background character

So note from me in the future, so I wrote this on the date you see on the post, but I’m writing this
a couple months later, just to say, I’m fine, don’t worry, I just feel like putting up the stuff
I’ve written for the blog even when it’s not… like… pleasant to read because this is more for me
than for you I guess, so yeah, I’m fine. Also any posts with the #vent tag are going

A simple recipe for mango jam, based on this recipe by Sarah
Carey and using these canning instructions.

Because I wanted this jam to set as a gel, I used a 1-to-1 fruit to sugar ratio by weight, instead
of the 2-to-1 ratio recommended by Sarah Carey’s recipe.

2025 09 16

Checking in and making stuff

So it’s been a while 😅…

My last post was a super short note on doing less. That note came from a
place of still somewhat feeling like I was overextending myself despite moving back home and being
extremely unemployed. The question really is what’s been keeping me so busy? Truth be told, a lot
of it has been stuff I do want to do. It being summer has meant a lot of my friends who are in school
either here on in the U.S. were around and available, so we spent a lot of time going out, hanging out
and generally touching grass in each other’s company, so that I can’t complain about too much.

Orchid

<img src="https://dayglo.warren-james-dev.workers.dev/art/orchid/images/20250805_025331.jpg"

imperfectly, so here it is!

Friendship and Connection

Spending time with my friends is always such a transformative experience for me.
For the first time in my adult life, I’m both unemployed and not a student. It feels like a massive weight has been lifted off of my chest but also that another is hanging over me, waiting to fall onto me. The strange part is that weight, the one I know is coming doesn’t feel as heavy.
